Class Policies,
Procedures, and Expectations
1. Students who do not attend mathematics classes get behind in their work and never seem to maintain the pace set in the class. Consequently, all students are expected to attend class regularly, arrive prior to class, be in your seat at the beginning of the period, and leave only when class is dismisses. Roll will be taken randomly. If you are not in the room when roll is taken it will be counted as an absence. Missing 13% (300 min.) or more of such sessions may result in an automatic failing grade. All absences are counted. No difference is made between an excused and unexcused absence. If you are not in class for whatever reason you have missed the material!
2.
Students who
do not attend class during the first three weeks of the semester will be
dropped from the roll by the University.
If your name is not on the class roll, it is your responsibility to
insure that it is placed on the roll and present a valid receipt dated after
the most recent roll. You will not
receive any grades until your name is on the roll. You will not receive a grade in this class
if your name is not on the final list.
3. Further information regarding academic or academically related misconduct, and disciplinary procedures and sanctions regarding such misconduct may be obtained by consulting the NSU Student Handbook.
4. Students are expected to ask questions in class. There is no such thing as a stupid question in this class!! If you have a question, it is likely that a majority of your classmates have the same question. Asking questions is one of the best methods to help you learn the material. It also informs the teacher about problems the class is having with the material.
5. For all 100 level classes, a computer tutorial is available for the class and participation is required. Please obtain instruction for the use of these tutorials from your instructor.
6. Most homework assignments will be the odd problems from the section being introduced. This assignment will be discussed during the next class period. Homework will not be graded. Instead, you are encouraged to work with your fellow students on the assignments. This way, homework will serve as a learning experience rather than an exercise in copying. However, at any time during a class period you may be asked to turn in randomly selected homework problems (a homework quiz). Homework quizzes will be given randomly, and no makeups will be administered. Each quiz will have approximately five questions, and each question is worth 1 point.
7. Tests will be administered on completion of textbook chapters. Each test will encompass 1 to 2 chapters. You will receive points for each question. The point value of each question will be indicated on the test. If you receive partial credit your score will be indicated next to each question number. Each test will have your score as a fraction with the numerator being your total correct and the denominator will be the total possible. If you miss a chapter test there will be no makeup, the next test will be counted double. Tests taken with pencil will not be considered for a regrade. DO NOT ASK.
8. Your grade in this class can be determined by you at any time by totaling the number of points earned by you and dividing by the total number of points possible.
9. In accordance with section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, if you have a disability, we ask that you please contact the Supporting Students through Disability Services (SSDS) office.
